Danny Murphy Reveals Why Chelsea’s Cole Palmer Might Be Disappointed
TalkSPORT pundit Danny Murphy has shared why he thinks Chelsea and England star Cole Palmer might be feeling a little “disappointed” at the moment.
Strong Start to the Season
Palmer, now in his second season at Chelsea, has been in excellent form in the early months of the campaign. The 22-year-old attacker has scored six goals and provided five assists in just seven Premier League appearances, quickly becoming a key player for the Blues. His standout performances at the club level earned him a starting spot in both of England’s Nations League games during the international break.
Mixed Performances for England
Despite his brilliant club form, Palmer wasn’t quite able to replicate his success on the international stage. England lost to Greece but bounced back with a win over Finland, though Palmer didn’t shine as brightly as he has for Chelsea. Football legend Paul Gascoigne praised Palmer’s quality this week, but Danny Murphy feels the young star might be a bit frustrated with his England performances.
Murphy’s Thoughts on Palmer’s England Form
Speaking on talkSPORT, Murphy said, “I think probably Palmer will be a little bit disappointed with his performance the other night [against Finland]. He’s set himself such ridiculously high standards, of course. We were all expecting that little bit more in the last couple of games from him.”
One reason for this could be Palmer’s position. In England’s recent matches, he wasn’t deployed in the No. 10 role, where he has excelled for Chelsea this season. In that role, he’s been dominant, contributing goals and assists regularly.
Looking Forward
Despite a quieter showing for England, Palmer’s club form remains outstanding. Last season, he impressed against top Premier League sides, scoring against the likes of Newcastle, Manchester United, and Arsenal. Although he didn’t face Liverpool in Chelsea’s league games last season, his ability to step up against strong opposition is clear.
While his international performances might not have met the high expectations, Palmer continues to thrive in Chelsea colours and remains a crucial figure for the Blues moving forward.
