The mistake Chelsea and Todd Boehly have already made with Enzo Maresca

The mistake Chelsea and Todd Boehly have already made with Enzo Maresca

Enzo Maresca Set to Take Over at Chelsea

Leicester City manager Enzo Maresca is poised to become Chelsea’s new head coach, following the club’s decision to make him their top choice to replace Mauricio Pochettino. As of Monday, it appears that the Blues have secured their man.

Why Enzo Maresca is a Risk for Chelsea

Maresca’s appointment comes with its own set of risks. He has limited experience as a first-team manager, having only taken on his first such role in 2021 with Parma. Since then, he has managed Leicester City, leading them to promotion to the Premier League this season. However, his tenure with the Foxes was just one season, and beyond his time at Parma and Leicester, he lacks experience managing senior teams. Importantly, he has never managed in the Premier League.

Maresca’s resume does include a stint as Pep Guardiola’s assistant at Manchester City, which might have influenced Chelsea’s decision.

Potential Mistake by Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali

Chelsea’s co-sporting directors, Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley, likely recommended Maresca to Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali. If they believe he is the best candidate, their approval makes sense. However, according to Fabrizio Romano, Maresca has been offered a five-year contract with an option for an additional 12 months.

Given Chelsea’s recent history of managerial changes, including the sackings of Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter and the mutual termination of Pochettino’s contract, this long-term deal could be problematic. If Chelsea decides to part ways with Maresca early, the compensation fee could be substantial due to the length of his contract. A three-year deal might have been more prudent, but it appears Chelsea has full confidence in Maresca. Time will tell if this gamble pays off.
